 Registration FAQ:

Is registration for Synchro only available for SMFSC skaters? What about skaters from other clubs?

Our initial registration period will be limited to SMFSC skaters only. However, if spots remain available after the initial SMFSC registration period, we welcome skaters from any Skate Canada club. For skaters from other clubs, we will require confirmation in writing of your participation in a minimum of two PreJunior or STARskate sessions per week at your home club.

Why do I need to complete my registration within a limited time period?

Registration spots for all of our programs are limited. To ensure that your spot is saved during the registration process and that all users have an equal opportunity to register for programs, you must confirm your registration with payment by either credit card or cheque.

I see a list of sessions under the "Registration" menu, but why do I not see a "Register" button beside each session?

Registration opens at different times for different programs and sessions. If there is no "Register" button beside the session you with to register for, registration may not yet be available for the session.

I am having troubles registering. Who can I contact for help?

Contact us at info@smfsc.ca with the details of your situation. As we are a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization, we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Suitability of the Program:

Is Synchro only geared only to figure skaters already in STARSkate?

For this season, yes. Our Synchro skaters must be registered in PreJunior, Junior, Intermediate or Senior.

Does my child need previous skating experience before signing up for Synchro?

Yes. The minimum requirement is for skaters to be in PreJunior (see Register for STARSkate page for detailed listing or qualifications for STARSkate, by level).

My child has a friend who also wants to register for Synchro. Is there any way to assure them that they will be on the same team?

For the season, we will be working on developing synchro skills for all team levels.

Will Synchro detract from singles skating?

Not at all. Synchro focuses on edges, power and flow. More than 50% of practice time will be devoted to improving basic stroking – edges and crossovers – plus turns and form. Synchro will improve skating skills – especially Freeskate Skills and Dance. We’ll do all this is a fun and supportive team environment. At SMFSC, Synchro skaters need to skate a minimum of two sessions per week in addition to the weekly Synchro practice. The skills learned in Synchro skating – edge control, power and turns -- help skaters develop poise, confidence and technique, which will benefit overall skating.

Do you have to try out for the Synchro team?

For the 2016/17 season, SMFSC will gauge the level of interest. Should there be more skaters interested than there are available spots, a tryout may be necessary. The coach will work closely with the Club to determine the best way to handle any scenario. Note, for Synchro, a team can carry up to 20 skaters, although in official competitions, only 16 can skate. Carrying more than 16 team members ensures that, in the event of illness or scheduling conflicts, a team will always have a full complement of skaters. Should there be more than 16 skaters, team members would be rotated.

Do all Synchro skaters have to participate in competitions/exhibitions?

Synchro team members are expected to participate in all competitions/exhibitions. The coach may designate a synchro skater as a "skater in training" -- these skaters will participate in the Synchro program to develop their skating but may not yet be ready to compete at a Juvenile level. Please contact the coach for more details.

Fees, Additional Costs and Volunteering:

What do the Synchro fee include?

Session fees include weekly ice time plus all coaching fees.

Will there be any additional expenses that might come up during the 2015/16 season?

Our Synchro team has a budget that team members will agree to. This will be in addition to session fees (which include ice rental and coaching fees). The team budget covers the cost of competition entries, costumes, practice attire, make-up, or any other items that the team agrees should be covered.  For more details, please contact the team coach or manager.

Are Synchro families required to complete the mandatory volunteering for STARSkate families?

Yes. All Synchro participants must register for a minimum of 2 STARSkate sessions per week. Every STARSkate family at SMFSC is required to participate in the mandatory volunteering program. For more details, see the STARSkate FAQs. In addition, the Synchro team may have other volunteering requirements for its skater families. For more details on the volunteering requirement for Synchro, please contact your team manager.

Withdrawing from the program or transferring to another class:

What is the withdrawal deadline for my 2016/17 Synchro session?

The withdrawal deadline is September 22, 2016. Any refund will be based on the date of receipt of written notice

If I join the program after the withdrawal deadline, do I have any option to withdraw?

Skaters who join a session after the withdrawal deadline may be able to withdraw (up to the end of their second scheduled class, regardless of attendance), subject to there being any classes left.

How do I withdraw from a course?

Before the withdrawal deadline, refunds are based on the date of receipt of a written notice, either provided during a Synchro session or emailed to info@smfsc.ca. Provide the child’s name, skating day, parent’s name, address, and reason for withdrawal.

If we want to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline, can we get a credit for future lessons?

SMFSC clearly explains their refund policy and offers sufficient time to try the program before the withdrawal deadline occurs. There are no credit notes provided after the deadline, except in the case of medical withdrawals. For further details, refer to “ Refund Policy”.

Wait List

If there are no spaces left in a class, do I have to pay to have my child’s name put on a waitlist?

No

How do I put my child’s name on the waitlist?

If a class if full, instead of a "Register" button beside the session, there will be a "Waitlist" button. When you should click that button, the site will allow you to add a child from your profile to the waitlist. Once a position has become available, you will be notified by email that a position is available. You can then log into the website and either register your child or remove them from the waitlist to allow the next person on the list to take their spot. Once the position is offered, there will be a limited time to complete the registration.

Can I find out where my child’s name is on the waitlist?

If you log into the website and click on "My Account" on the top right hand corner, you can then select "My Waitlist" from the submenu on the left hand side. This list will display each of the programs and children who are on the waitlist for each individual program along with their position on the list.

Will the waitlist be carried forward to the next session?

No. Your skater’s name will be kept on the waiting list, without charge, until partway through the session. The lists will then be deleted. Names from the waitlist will not be carried forward to a future session.

Missed Classes:

Are there any situations in which make up lessons are provided to a skater?

SMFSC is not able to offer makeup classes or refunds due to classes cancelled because of severe weather or other circumstances beyond SMFSC’S control.

What if I have to miss a class?

Please ensure that you inform the Synchro Coach (Sarah Clarke) in advance so he can plan the lesson accordingly.
